What you are looking at

Station 51000, Northern Hawaii One, floats about 245 nautical miles northeast of Honolulu, over water some 4,848 meters (about 15,900 feet) deep. NOAA's National Data Buoy Center maintains this 3-meter foam buoy on the windward side of the Hawaiian Islands, far out of sight of land.

Hawaii's northeast trade winds blow across this spot before they reach the islands, so the buoy gives forecasters a measure of trade-wind strength and the short, choppy swell they build along windward coasts. It also catches north and northeast swell heading toward Maui, Molokai and Oahu. Readings include wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and sea-surface temperature, and wave height and period, all used by the National Weather Service in Honolulu.

The camera's photo strip, generally taken about hourly in daylight, shows deep blue water, whitecaps and the puffy trade-wind clouds that drift across the sky most of the year. In winter, cold fronts and big North Pacific swells sometimes reach this far south. The central Pacific hurricane season runs from June through November. Expect a tilted horizon as the buoy rolls.
