What you are looking at
Station 51003, Western Hawaii, sits about 205 nautical miles southwest of Honolulu, over very deep water, roughly 5,034 meters (about 16,500 feet). It is a 3-meter discus buoy owned and maintained by the National Data Buoy Center, out in open ocean southwest of Kauai and Oahu.
Here the buoy picks up conditions on the downwind, leeward side of the islands. Forecasters use it to track south and southwest swell heading toward the south shores of Oahu and Kauai, to see how the trade winds behave as they flow past the chain, and to follow tropical systems moving west of the state. Its readings of wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and sea-surface temperature, and wave height and period feed National Weather Service forecasts from Honolulu.
In the hourly daylight photo strip you can expect wide tropical skies and deep blue water, with no land in sight. Summer brings south swells and steady trade-wind clouds, winter can bring passing fronts and occasional Kona winds from the south, and hurricane season runs June through November. The buoy's motion keeps the horizon tilting.
