What you are looking at
Station 51101, Northwestern Hawaii Two, is a 3-meter foam buoy about 186 nautical miles northwest of Kauai, in water some 4,847 meters (about 15,900 feet) deep. It shares this remote corner of the ocean with station 51001, and the two give the National Data Buoy Center a pair of observing points far upstream of the main Hawaiian Islands.
Having two stations in the same general area gives forecasters a cross-check on measurements of wind speed, gusts and direction, air pressure, air and sea-surface temperature, and wave height and period. The nearest land is the scattered small islands of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, part of the Papahānaumokuākea marine area, all far below the horizon. Ships traveling between Hawaii and Asia or the West Coast also pass through these waters.
The camera strip, generally photographed about hourly in daylight, is a pure open-ocean scene: wide sky, deep blue water and whatever weather happens to be passing. Winter can bring frontal clouds and heavy northwest swell, and summer usually means steady trade winds and fair-weather cumulus. The horizon tilts as the buoy rides the waves.
