What you are looking at
NASA runs this high-definition stream from an external camera mounted on the space station's Harmony module. The camera looks forward at an angle, so part of the station's hardware, including International Docking Adapter 2 where visiting spacecraft can dock, stays in the frame while Earth slides by underneath. The station orbits about 250 miles (425 kilometers) high at roughly 17,500 miles per hour.
On a daylight pass you may see storm systems, deserts, ice, and the thin blue line of the atmosphere on the horizon. On the night side the view turns dark, sometimes with lightning flashes, city lights or the glow of an aurora near the poles. A full orbit takes about an hour and a half, so day and night swap quickly.
The stream plays as live video on YouTube. If NASA cannot use the Harmony camera for a longer period, it shows a loop of recorded Earth views marked "Previously Recorded" in the corner, so check for that label before you assume you are seeing the planet in real time. Full screen on a large display gives the best sense of scale.
