What you are looking at

This is one of JMA's closest views of Hokkaido-Komagatake. The camera is named for Kengamine, the jagged high point of the summit, and stands near it at close to a thousand meters, high on the volcano's broad cone in southern Hokkaido. JMA lists it as a combined visible and thermal camera, placed to watch the summit crater area at short range.

Komagatake rises above Lake Onuma, north of Hakodate. In 1640 part of the mountain collapsed and slid into Uchiura Bay, setting off a deadly tsunami, and a large eruption in 1929 showered pumice over the surrounding towns. Smaller eruptions came in 1996, 1998 and 2000. Today the summit area is quiet most days, with snow in winter and frequent cloud, so some images will show little more than mist and rock.

JMA assigns Komagatake a Volcanic Alert Level from 1 to 5. The lower steps limit access to the crater and the mountain; the upper steps ask nearby residents to prepare or evacuate. Hikers should check JMA's current level, and the local trail rules, before climbing.
