What you are looking at

This is NASA's own live stream from the International Space Station, published on the agency's YouTube channel. When the crew is on duty you may see inside views of the station's modules; at other times an external camera shows Earth rolling past below. The station flies about 250 miles (425 kilometers) up and circles the planet roughly every 90 minutes, so it passes through about sixteen sunrises and sunsets a day.

Expect a mix: bright daytime oceans, cloud bands and coastlines, then dark stretches during orbital night where you may only see city lights or nothing at all. When the station switches between communication satellites the signal drops for a while and NASA shows a blue screen. That is normal and the picture comes back on its own.

The feed plays as live video through YouTube's player. A practical tip: if the screen is dark or blue, give it a few minutes before you leave, and use NASA's free Spot the Station service to learn when the station will cross your own sky, where it looks like a bright, fast-moving star.
