What you are looking at

NamibiaCam, operated by Gondwana Collection Namibia, streams this view from a waterhole in the Gondwana Kalahari Park, about 100 square kilometers of Kalahari landscape in southern Namibia near the company's Kalahari Anib Lodge. The scene is classic Kalahari: red-orange sand, yellow grass and dark green acacia trees under a wide sky.

The park is home to animals adapted to dry country, such as gemsbok (oryx), springbok, ostriches, eland, bat-eared foxes and black-backed jackals. Look in the trees too: sociable weavers build huge shared nests that can fill an acacia crown. Animals often come to drink in the cool of morning and late afternoon, and the sunset colors on the dunes are a highlight. After dark the camera switches to black-and-white infrared, so you can still see animals moving in the night.

The stream plays as live video on YouTube. Namibia is on Central Africa Time, several hours ahead of the Americas. A practical tip: check the time stamp in the corner of the picture to know whether it is day or night in the Kalahari, and look for the eyes of animals shining in the infrared view after sunset.
