What you are looking at

Kirishimayama is a cluster of more than twenty volcanoes on the border of Miyazaki and Kagoshima in southern Kyushu, and this JMA camera at Inokoishi watches its Ohachi crater. The camera sits at under five hundred meters, about five kilometers south-southwest of the crater, looking up the slope toward Ohachi and, behind it, the peak of Takachihonomine.

Ohachi, whose name means "bowl," is a large, steep-walled crater on the trail to Takachihonomine, a peak tied to Japan's founding myths. It erupted repeatedly in the early twentieth century and has stayed mostly quiet since, with occasional fumes. Elsewhere in the group, Shinmoedake has erupted several times since 2011, and Ioyama near Ebino Plateau erupted in 2018, which is why JMA watches each area on its own. Expect lush green summers, spring azaleas and frequent cloud on the peaks.

JMA issues a separate Volcanic Alert Level for Ohachi, on a scale of 1 to 5 that moves from crater-area limits to evacuation. Before hiking the Takachiho-gawara trail, check JMA's current level for Ohachi.
