What you are looking at
This camera sits on the summit of Ainomine, a small peak about two thousand one hundred meters up in the middle of Kusatsu-Shiranesan, the volcano above the hot-spring town of Kusatsu in Gunma. Ainomine lies between the two areas JMA watches most closely: Shirane, with its acidic, milky-green crater lake Yugama, to the north, and Motoshirane to the south.
Kusatsu-Shiranesan has a long record of steam explosions around Yugama, and in January 2018 a sudden eruption at Motoshirane, next to a ski area, killed one person and injured others. Since then JMA issues separate warnings for the Yugama area, for Motoshirane and for the rest of the volcano. The scenic Shiga-Kusatsu road crosses the mountain near here, but it closes in winter and sometimes when activity rises; expect deep snow, fog and strong winds at this height.
Both the Yugama area and Motoshirane have their own Volcanic Alert Level on JMA's 1-to-5 scale, which moves from crater-area restrictions to evacuation. Because the levels can differ, check JMA's current level for each area before you visit.
