What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera on La Dôle, one of the high summits of the Swiss Jura above Nyon, near the border with France. The camera stands at about 1,677 meters, close to the antennas and the weather radar on the summit, and takes a wide panorama of the mountaintop and the open sky around it. A metal mast often appears in part of the frame.

On clear days, La Dôle is famous for the view south over Lake Geneva to the Alps, including the Mont Blanc massif. But this is an exposed summit, and the camera is just as often wrapped in cloud, showing nothing but grey fog, frost on the instruments or blowing snow. In autumn and winter the summit may poke above a sea of fog that covers the lake and the Swiss plateau, with clear sunshine above. MeteoSwiss uses the camera to watch weather along the flight routes into Geneva.

The camera saves a panoramic still image every ten minutes. At twilight an infrared filter produces black-and-white images, and at night the picture may be dark. A practical tip: the time stamp is in UTC, so add one hour for Swiss winter time or two for summer time.
