What you are looking at

This is the round-the-clock broadcast of the Saudi Quran TV channel, an official channel of the Saudi Broadcasting Authority, from Masjid al-Haram, the Great Mosque of Mecca. The camera looks down on the Kaaba, the black cube at the center of the mosque that Muslims around the world face when they pray, and on the open courtyard around it.

At almost any hour you will see pilgrims walking around the Kaaba in the ritual circling called tawaf, a slow river of people that rarely stops. Five times a day the movement pauses for the call to prayer and the worshippers form neat rows for the congregational prayer led by the imam. The crowds are largest during Ramadan, especially its last ten nights, and during the Hajj pilgrimage, whose dates follow the Islamic lunar calendar and move earlier each year.

The broadcast plays as live video on YouTube, with the sound of the mosque, including the call to prayer and recitation of the Quran. Mecca is on Arabia Standard Time, seven or eight hours ahead of the US East Coast. A practical tip: watch at prayer time to see the whole courtyard settle into rows.
