What you are looking at

This NamibiaCam stream from Gondwana Collection Namibia shows a remote waterhole in the Gondwana Namib Park, next to the vast Namib-Naukluft Park. Gondwana says the waterhole was built in 2006 about 8 kilometers from its Namib Desert Lodge. It is solar powered and fed by a borehole, with a float that keeps the water level steady, so it draws wildlife from far across the desert.

Fences have been removed across a huge area here, so animals move freely. Look for oryx, springbok, ostriches, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, red hartebeest, steenbok, jackals and hyenas, and possibly even a leopard. Around the waterhole lie open plains and red dunes, part of the oldest desert landscape on Earth, with the Namib Sand Sea further on. Mornings and late afternoons often bring the most visits, while the middle of a hot day can be quiet apart from shimmering heat.

The feed plays as live video on YouTube. Because the location is so remote, the stream can be interrupted now and then. A practical tip: watch at sunrise or sunset in Namibia, when the light turns the sand deep orange and animals come to drink before or after the heat of the day.
