What you are looking at

NamibiaCam, run by the Namibian tourism company Gondwana Collection, streams this view of the Okaukuejo waterhole in Etosha National Park, northern Namibia. The waterhole lies at the edge of the Okaukuejo rest camp, where a viewing area with seating lets park visitors watch the animals, so you may hear their voices in the background. At night the waterhole is lit by floodlights.

Elephants, giraffes, zebras, springbok, oryx and wildebeest are regular visitors, and lions sometimes come to drink or wait for prey. After dark the floodlit scene changes: black rhinos are known for visiting Okaukuejo at night, along with jackals and hyenas. The dry season, roughly May to October, brings the biggest crowds of animals, because most other water in the park has dried up. After the summer rains, from about December to March, animals spread out and the waterhole can be quieter.

The stream plays as live video on YouTube around the clock. Namibia is on Central Africa Time, which is several hours ahead of the US. A practical tip: watch at dusk and in the first hours of the night in Namibia, when the floodlights come on and some of the most memorable visits happen.
