What you are looking at

This elephant cam is run by explore.org in partnership with Africam. It overlooks the waterhole at the Mahlasela Hide in Tembe Elephant Park, a reserve of about 300 square kilometers in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, close to the border with Mozambique. Tembe is known for its very large elephants, including bulls with long tusks often called super tuskers.

Elephants come down to drink, bathe and spray themselves with mud, sometimes in family herds with small calves and sometimes as lone bulls. Explore.org says activity is steady, with the most sightings in daylight, especially mid-morning and late afternoon. Keep an eye out for other animals that share the reserve, including buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard, along with antelope, warthogs and many birds. The dry winter months, roughly May to September, tend to draw more animals to standing water.

The stream plays as live video on YouTube. South Africa is six or seven hours ahead of the US East Coast, depending on the season. A practical tip: plan to watch in the South African late afternoon, when herds often arrive to drink before dark.
