What you are looking at
Set at Tsukiura, on the western shore of Lake Toya, this JMA camera looks south-southeast toward Usuzan, about eight kilometers away. The low, rounded volcano sits on the southern rim of the Toya caldera, and from the lake side you see it as a broad hump crowned by craggy domes, sometimes with wisps of steam.
Usuzan has erupted roughly every few decades in modern times: in 1910, in 1943 to 1945, when a new lava dome called Showa-Shinzan pushed up through farmland, in 1977 and 1978, and in 2000, when craters opened at the western foot near the town of Abuta. Thanks to warning signs and early evacuation, the 2000 eruption caused no deaths, and the area is now part of the Toya Caldera and Usu Volcano UNESCO Global Geopark.
JMA uses a five-level Volcanic Alert Level for Usuzan, with Level 1 meaning the volcano is active but quiet and higher levels asking people to stay off the mountain or evacuate. Always check JMA's current level; the camera image alone can't tell you.
