Lyon is the third-largest city in France, home to about 520,000 people within the city limits and well over two million in its wider region. It grew up where the Saône flows into the Rhône, and the long tongue of land between the two rivers, the Presqu'île, holds its central squares, including the vast Place Bellecour. On the west bank the Fourvière hill rises above the old town, crowned by a nineteenth-century basilica and the remains of Roman theaters from the time when Lugdunum was a capital of Gaul. Old Lyon, Fourvière, the Presqu'île and the slopes of the Croix-Rousse are listed together as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the city is widely known for its food, from traditional bouchons to the indoor market named after the chef Paul Bocuse.

The cameras listed for Lyon come from Criter, the traffic control center run by the Métropole de Lyon, which shares still images taken from its camera feeds about once a minute through the regional mobility service Onlymoov. They are road views of the city's main corridors: the north-south motorway that dives under the hill through the Fourvière tunnel, the river quays, the ring road and some of the many bridges that cross the Rhône and the Saône. Expect plenty of traffic lights, tramway crossings and river glimpses.

When to look

Lyon follows Central European Time, with summer time from late March to late October. In late June the sun sets after half past nine, while in December it goes down before five. The biggest moment of the year is the Fête des Lumières, which begins around the eighth of December and lasts four days, when light installations cover buildings and streets and the center fills with visitors. Summer departures for the south of France make the Fourvière tunnel famous for weekend jams in July and August.

The Confluence district at the southern tip of the Presqu'île shows the city's newer face, and the Parc de la Tête d'Or, one of the largest urban parks in France, lies along the Rhône to the north.
