What you are looking at
This camera in Homer, on the Kenai Peninsula, stands on a hillside above the shore and looks southwest across lower Cook Inlet toward Augustine Volcano, about 105 km (65 miles) away. Most of the frame is sky and open water, with a birch tree and shrubs on the right; on clear days, Augustine appears as a small, pale cone on the horizon.
Augustine is an island volcano in lower Cook Inlet and one of the most active in the region, with significant eruptions in 1976, 1986 and 2006. Its explosive eruptions have sent ash toward Kenai Peninsula communities, and its steep dome can collapse into avalanches that reach the sea. Check the Alaska Volcano Observatory Augustine page for the current alert level.
The snapshot updates about every ten minutes. At this distance, Augustine is often hidden by haze or low cloud; clear winter days with cold, dry air give the best visibility. Sunsets can silhouette the volcano against a colorful sky. Tip: for close views of the volcano, use the Augustine Mound or Lagoon cameras on the island itself.
