What you are looking at
The AULG camera, named for a lagoon on the west side of Augustine Island, sits low, near the shore, some 5 km (3 miles) west of the summit. It looks east-southeast at the volcano's rounded, snow-streaked upper cone, with branches framing the left edge of the picture and the island's lower slopes stretching toward the peak.
Augustine is built of overlapping lava domes and debris from repeated collapses of its summit. Its most recent eruption, in 2006, included explosive bursts, pyroclastic flows down the north flank and slow growth of a new lava dome. The volcano's island location in lower Cook Inlet means that a large collapse could send a small tsunami across the inlet. AVO posts current activity on its Augustine page.
New images arrive about every ten minutes. Snow cover varies widely with the seasons, from a white cone in winter to dark gray rock and ash in late summer. Watch for steam from the summit on cold, calm days. Tip: compare with the Mound camera on the east side to see how different the volcano looks from each direction.
