What you are looking at

Buoy 46011 sits 21 nautical miles northwest of Point Arguello, California, off the coast of Santa Barbara County, in about 416 meters (roughly 1,365 feet) of water. It is known as the Santa Maria buoy, after the valley and river that reach the sea nearby. Its camera sends a wide strip of photos in several directions, generally hourly during daylight; at this distance the coast may or may not show.

This stretch, just north of Point Conception, is where the California coast turns and the northwest winds often blow hard. Ships running along the coast, commercial fishers and surfers on the Central Coast all keep an eye on it. The National Data Buoy Center's 3-meter discus buoy reports wind speed and gusts, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period for National Weather Service forecasts.

Spring and early summer are often windy, with whitecaps and cool, upwelled water. Summer mornings can be wrapped in fog. Winter brings Pacific storms and big northwest swell, while calm, clear days between systems show a deep blue sea.
