What you are looking at

Eighteen nautical miles west of San Francisco, station 46026 floats in the Gulf of the Farallones in about 53 meters (some 174 feet) of water. The Farallon Islands lie off to the west-southwest and the city's coast to the east, so on clear days land may appear in parts of the camera's photo strip, generally taken hourly in daylight. Often, though, the view is open sea, sky and fog.

This buoy guards the approaches to the Golden Gate. Container ships, tankers, harbor pilots, fishing boats and the sailors who race outside the Gate all check it, and so do surfers watching for swell at Ocean Beach and up and down the coast. The National Data Buoy Center's 3-meter foam buoy reports wind and gusts, air pressure, air and water temperature, and wave height and period, all feeding National Weather Service forecasts.

Summer is fog season here, with the marine layer pouring toward the Gate and strong afternoon westerly winds. Autumn often brings the clearest, calmest days. In winter, North Pacific storms send powerful long-period swells and rain across the Gulf.
