What you are looking at
The California Academy of Sciences streams this high-definition camera from the lighthouse on top of Southeast Farallon Island, about 27 miles west of the Golden Gate. The Farallon Islands are a national wildlife refuge closed to the public, so this camera is one of the few ways to see their jagged peaks and rocky shores.
The Farallones are a major seabird colony. In spring and summer you may see huge numbers of common murres and other seabirds crowding the rocks, along with western gulls nesting on the slopes. Sea lions and fur seals haul out on the shore, and northern elephant seals come ashore in winter. In autumn the waters around the islands are known for white sharks hunting seals, and whales pass the islands at several times of year. Weather changes fast here, with thick fog common in summer.
The feed plays as live video on YouTube. A practical tip: watch on clear winter and autumn days for the sharpest views, and look along the waterline for seals, sea lions and the splash of feeding birds.
