What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera on the Frienisberg, a wooded hill north-west of Bern, at about 731 meters. The panorama looks over farm fields, a village and farm buildings to the wide, flat Seeland region, with the long line of the Jura mountains on the horizon. Trees frame both sides of the view.

The Seeland, with the lakes of Biel, Neuchâtel and Murten, is one of Switzerland's main farming regions, and the open view makes it easy to watch the sky. MeteoSwiss uses this camera mainly to follow weather along flight routes in the Bern region. In autumn and winter the lowlands often lie under fog or low stratus cloud for days, sometimes with the Frienisberg just above or below the cloud top. Fronts approaching from the west, summer thunderstorms and the changing colors of the fields through the seasons are all easy to follow here.

A new panoramic still image is saved every ten minutes. At dawn and dusk the camera uses an infrared filter that produces black-and-white images. A practical tip: the time printed on the image is UTC, so add one hour in winter or two in summer for Swiss local time.
