What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera at Heiligenschwendi, on the hillside above Lake Thun in the canton of Bern, at about 1,010 meters. The panorama looks down over meadows and trees to the lake, the town of Thun at its end and the mountains of the Bernese Oberland rising beyond, including the pyramid of the Niesen and, on clear days, snowy summits further away.

This is one of the network's most scenic views. MeteoSwiss uses the camera to watch weather along flight routes into the Bernese Alps. In autumn and winter a sea of fog often covers Lake Thun and the lowlands, and Heiligenschwendi may sit just above it in the sun. You may also see rain moving across the lake, fresh snow on the mountains, summer thunderstorms building over the peaks and bright, clear days after a cold front when the Alps look close enough to touch.

The camera saves a new panoramic still image every ten minutes and uses an infrared filter at dawn and dusk for black-and-white images in low light. A practical tip: the time printed on the image is UTC, so add one hour in winter and two in summer for Swiss local time.
