What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera at Kaiserstuhl in the canton of Obwalden, at about 732 meters, at the northern end of Lake Lungern on the road to the Brünig Pass. The panorama looks over the wooded slopes and pastures of the valley, a high-voltage power line and mountains on both sides, with glimpses of the lakes in the valley below.

The Brünig Pass links central Switzerland with the Bernese Oberland, and MeteoSwiss uses this camera to watch weather along flight routes across this part of the Alps. You may see low cloud lying along the mountainsides, rain moving down the valley, snow on the slopes in winter, and bright days with clear views of the surrounding peaks. The area is often affected by foehn winds from the south, which can bring warm, dry air and dramatic cloud shapes, and by the rain and snow that build up against the northern side of the Alps.

The camera saves a panoramic still image every ten minutes and uses an infrared filter for black-and-white images in low light at dawn and dusk. A practical tip: the time on the picture is UTC, so add one or two hours for Swiss local time.
