What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera at Brugnasco, a small village above Airolo in the upper Leventina valley of Ticino, at about 1,396 meters. The panorama looks over forested slopes, village houses and power lines toward the deep valley below, close to the southern side of the Gotthard Pass.

This area sits right where the weather of northern and southern Switzerland meet. When moist air flows in from the south, the camera may show thick cloud and fog filling the valley and heavy rain or snow; when the north wind blows, the Leventina often clears, while foehn conditions pile cloud up on the northern side of the Gotthard. Winter brings deep snow to the village and the slopes, and summer gives green forests and meadows. MeteoSwiss uses the camera to watch weather along flight routes across the Gotthard, one of the key crossings of the Alps.

The camera saves a new panoramic still image every ten minutes, and at twilight it switches to an infrared filter for black-and-white pictures. A practical tip: the time stamp on the image is in UTC, so add one or two hours for Swiss local time.
