What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera at Cevio, a village in the Valle Maggia in the canton of Ticino, at about 427 meters. The panorama looks over flat rooftops in the foreground to the village houses and a steep, forested mountain rising right behind them, with the valley opening on either side.

The Valle Maggia is a deep, narrow valley north of Locarno, on the southern side of the Alps, and it is known for heavy rainfall when moist air from the Mediterranean pushes against the mountains. You may see clouds and mist clinging to the steep slopes after rain, thunderstorms in summer, bright sunny days with a Mediterranean feel, and snow on the upper slopes in winter. When the north wind blows, Ticino often enjoys clear, dry weather while the north of Switzerland is grey. MeteoSwiss uses the camera to watch weather along flight routes across the Alps.

A new panoramic still image is saved every ten minutes. At twilight the camera uses an infrared filter that produces black-and-white images. A practical tip: the time stamp is in UTC, one hour behind Swiss time in winter and two in summer.
