What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera at the Grimsel Pass area in the Bernese Alps, near the Grimsel Hospiz, at about 2,221 meters. The panorama shows a stark landscape of granite rock polished by old glaciers, the reservoir of Grimselsee in its deep valley, a smaller lake near the pass, and the winding pass road between Bern and Valais.

The Grimsel is a high pass on a weather divide, so the camera shows sharp contrasts: clouds pouring over from the north while the south is clear, or the other way round. Snow can fall in any season, and the pass road is closed for much of the year, usually from autumn until late spring, when snow and avalanche danger make it impassable. In summer you may see cars, motorcycles and buses on the road and hikers on the rocks. MeteoSwiss uses the camera to watch weather over the central Alps along flight routes.

A panoramic still image is saved every ten minutes, and at twilight the camera switches to an infrared filter for black-and-white images. A practical tip: if you plan to drive the pass, check the official road status as well as this view, and remember the image time is in UTC.
