What you are looking at
MeteoSwiss, the Swiss federal weather service, runs this weather camera above Disentis/Mustér in the Surselva region of Graubünden, at about 1,203 meters. The panorama looks across meadows and forest to the village below and the mountains around the upper valley of the Vorderrhein, the Rhine's western source branch. Disentis is known for its large Benedictine monastery and as a stop on the railway toward the Oberalp Pass.
MeteoSwiss keeps these cameras mainly to watch weather along key routes used by aircraft, including mountain passes. Here you may see clouds piling up against the peaks, rain or snow showers crossing the valley, and clear days when the ridges stand out sharply. Winter usually covers the village and slopes in snow, while summer brings green pastures and afternoon cumulus clouds that can grow into thunderstorms. When a warm, dry foehn wind blows from the south, skies can clear quickly on this side of the Alps.
The camera saves a panoramic still image every ten minutes, and at dawn and dusk it uses an infrared filter for black-and-white pictures in low light. The time on the image is in UTC, one or two hours behind Swiss local time.
