MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera in the Splügen area of Graubünden, at about 2,147 meters, high above the village of Splügen in the Rheinwald valley, on the route to the Splügen Pass and Italy. The panorama shows open alpine slopes with ski-lift stations and lift towers, a small mountain lake and the surrounding peaks.
At this height the weather is often harsh. You may see low cloud hiding the summits, snow arriving early in autumn, deep winter snow cover and strong winds blowing it across the slopes. When southern weather systems push moist air over the Alps, clouds can stack up from the Italian side; on clear days the ridges stand out sharply. In winter the lifts are busy with skiers, while summer shows brown and green alpine meadows. MeteoSwiss uses the camera to watch conditions along flight routes over the central Alps.
A new panoramic still image is saved every ten minutes. At twilight the camera switches to an infrared filter for black-and-white images in low light. A practical tip: the Splügen Pass road usually closes in winter, so check the official road status, and remember the time on the image is UTC.
