What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this high-alpine weather camera at Murtèl, on the slopes of Piz Corvatsch above the Upper Engadine in Graubünden, at about 2,708 meters, near the middle station of the Corvatsch cable car. The panorama shows a stone-slab roof in the foreground, rocky ground, the cable car pylons and station, and a view down to the valley and the mountains on the far side.

Murtèl is also known to scientists for its rock glacier, a slowly creeping mass of frozen rock and ice that has been studied for many years as a sign of mountain permafrost. The weather here can be dramatic: clouds rising out of the valley and swirling around the cable car, a sea of cloud below with sunshine above, heavy snow in winter and bare grey rock in late summer. On clear days the view stretches across the Engadine. MeteoSwiss uses the camera to watch weather along flight routes over the eastern Alps.

A panoramic still image is saved every ten minutes. At twilight an infrared filter produces black-and-white images, and nights may be dark. A practical tip: the time stamp on the image is in UTC, one or two hours behind Swiss local time.
