Sondrio is the main town of Valtellina, the long east-west valley of the Adda River in the far north of Lombardy, close to the Swiss border. The town sits at about 360 meters where the Mallero stream comes down from Valmalenco to meet the Adda, and it is the capital of its province. About 21,400 people lived here at the end of 2024. Above the town, the sunny north side of the valley is lined with stone-walled terraces of Nebbiolo vines, known locally as Chiavennasca, which give the Valtellina Superiore wines, including the Sassella and Grumello areas named after the hillsides around Sondrio. The old center has the Masegra Castle, the Torre Ligariana and a lively main square.

There are no cameras inside the town on our map, so this page shows the nearest ones, across the border in Switzerland, about 28 to 36 km away. They are MeteoSwiss weather cameras that take a 360-degree panorama every ten minutes. Views include Piz Corvatsch at 3,307 meters and the Murtel station below it, high above the Upper Engadine lakes, plus Casaccia in the Val Bregaglia and Bivio on the road toward the Julier Pass. They are a good way to see snow cover, cloud and weather on the mountain ridge that closes Valtellina to the north.

When to look

Sondrio is on Central European Time (UTC+1, UTC+2 from late March to late October). Summers are warm in the valley, with July highs near 29°C, while the Swiss passes get snow from autumn to late spring. Grape harvest on the terraces usually comes in September and October, the season when the hillsides turn gold. Clear winter mornings give the sharpest views from the high cameras.

Nearby, Tirano, farther up the valley, is the southern end of the Bernina Express, the Rhaetian Railway line over the Bernina Pass to St. Moritz and Chur. Chur has its own page on our map.
