What you are looking at
MeteoSwiss runs this high-alpine weather camera on Piz Corvatsch in the Upper Engadine, Graubünden, at about 3,307 meters, close to the top station of the Corvatsch cable car above Silvaplana and St. Moritz. It is one of the highest cameras in the MeteoSwiss network, and its panorama shows the summit station, rock and snow, and on clear days a wide sweep of glaciated peaks.
On good days the view from Corvatsch takes in the Bernina range and the chain of Engadine lakes far below. But at this height the camera is often inside the clouds, showing only grey fog, rime ice on the structures or blowing snow. Snow can fall in any month, and winter brings bitter cold and strong winds. Sometimes the summit rises above a sea of cloud that fills the valleys, with bright sun above. MeteoSwiss uses the camera to watch the weather over the high Alps along flight routes.
A new panoramic still image is saved every ten minutes. At dawn and dusk an infrared filter gives black-and-white pictures, and nights may be dark. A practical tip: the time on the picture is UTC, which is one or two hours behind Swiss time.
