What you are looking at
MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera at Goldau, in the canton of Schwyz, at about 535 meters, overlooking the busy Arth-Goldau railway station. The panorama shows the tracks and trains in the foreground, the town, the slopes of the Rigi and the Rossberg, the twin peaks of the Mythen in the distance and a glimpse of Lake Zug.
Arth-Goldau is an important railway junction on the Gotthard route, so trains come and go often. The village is also known for the great landslide of 1806, when part of the Rossberg collapsed onto the valley. MeteoSwiss uses the camera to follow weather along flight routes through central Switzerland. You may see low clouds hanging on the Rigi, rain moving through the valley, snow on the mountains in winter and clear days when the Mythen stand out sharply. Foehn days bring warm air and unusual clarity.
A new panoramic still image is saved every ten minutes. At twilight the camera switches to an infrared filter for black-and-white images in low light. A practical tip: the time printed on the image is UTC, one or two hours behind Swiss local time.
