What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera at Zürich-Fluntern, on the slopes of the Zürichberg above Switzerland's largest city, at about 574 meters. Fluntern is the home of MeteoSwiss's Zurich weather station, one of the oldest in the country, and the camera's panorama looks out over the rooftops of Zurich, Lake Zurich stretching away to the south-east, and the long wooded ridge of the Uetliberg across the city. Instruments on the roof appear at the edge of the frame.

The view is a good way to see Zurich's weather at a glance. In autumn and winter the city is often covered by low stratus or fog, while on clear days the Alps can appear far beyond the lake. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms rolling in from the west, and on foehn days the mountains look unusually sharp and close. Snow on the city's roofs is a sign of a real winter day in Zurich.

The camera saves a new panoramic still image every ten minutes, and at twilight it uses an infrared filter that gives black-and-white images. The time stamp is in UTC, so add one hour in winter or two hours in summer for local time.
