What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera at Frauenfeld, the capital of the canton of Thurgau in north-eastern Switzerland, at about 517 meters. The panorama looks out over the town and the wide, gently rolling countryside of Thurgau, with farmland, woods and low hills on the horizon. It is a typical view of the Swiss Plateau between the Alps and the Jura.

MeteoSwiss uses this camera mainly to follow weather along flight routes in north-eastern Switzerland. The flat landscape shows the sky well: in autumn and winter the area is often under fog or a lid of low stratus cloud for days, while the sun shines above it in the mountains. Fronts approaching from the west are easy to spot, and summer brings building cumulus clouds and thunderstorms in the afternoon. On clear days the view can reach far across the countryside.

A new panoramic still image is saved every ten minutes. At dawn and dusk the camera switches to an infrared filter that produces black-and-white images. A practical tip: the time stamp on the image is in UTC, so add one hour in winter or two in summer to get Swiss local time.
