What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera near Leibstadt, in the canton of Aargau, close to the Rhine and the border with Germany, at about 483 meters. The panorama looks out over fields, orchards and woods to the Rhine valley and the hills on the German side. The cooling tower of the Leibstadt nuclear power plant stands in the view, and its white steam plume is often visible.

That plume is a handy weather sign: rising straight up on calm days, bending sharply in strong winds and merging with low cloud in grey weather. MeteoSwiss uses this camera mainly to follow the weather along flight routes into northern Switzerland. In autumn and winter the Rhine valley often fills with fog or low stratus, while spring and summer bring fronts from the west and afternoon thunderstorms. Clear days show long views across the rolling countryside.

The camera saves a new panoramic still image every ten minutes. At dawn and dusk it uses an infrared filter that makes black-and-white images in low light. A practical tip: the time printed on the image is UTC, which is one hour behind Swiss time in winter and two in summer.
