What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss, Switzerland's federal weather service, runs this weather camera at Château-d'Oex, a village in the Pays-d'Enhaut in the Vaud Alps. The camera stands at about 1,032 meters on a grassy slope above the village and takes a wide panorama across the valley: meadows and wooden chalets in front, the village on the valley floor, and a skyline of rocky limestone peaks on both sides.

MeteoSwiss runs around 35 of these cameras mainly to watch the weather along Switzerland's main flight routes, so meteorologists can see cloud bases, fog and showers in the valleys. Here you may see morning fog lying in the valley in autumn, snow-covered slopes and roofs in winter, and green pastures with grazing cows in summer. Château-d'Oex is known for its international hot-air balloon festival each January, and on calm winter days balloons may drift across the sky.

The camera saves a new panoramic still image every ten minutes. At dawn and dusk it switches to an infrared filter, which gives clear black-and-white pictures in low light. The time stamp on the image is in UTC, which is one hour behind Swiss time in winter and two hours behind in summer.
