What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera on Mont-Pèlerin, the wooded hill above Vevey on the shore of Lake Geneva, in the canton of Vaud, at about 1,152 meters. The wide panorama looks out over the lake, the vineyard slopes and the plateau, with the Alps of Valais and Savoy rising beyond the water on clear days.

This is one of the classic views of Lake Geneva, and it shows the weather of the lake region well. In autumn and winter the lake and lowlands often lie under a sea of fog or low cloud, while Mont-Pèlerin may be above it in sunshine. Strong winds such as the bise from the north-east can sweep the lake, raising waves, and summer brings thunderstorms building over the mountains. On clear days the snowy peaks across the lake look close. MeteoSwiss uses the camera to watch weather along flight routes into Geneva.

The camera saves a new panoramic still image every ten minutes and uses an infrared filter for black-and-white images at dawn and dusk. A practical tip: the time stamp on the image is in UTC, so add one hour in winter or two hours in summer.
