What you are looking at

MeteoSwiss runs this weather camera at Ravoire, above Martigny in the canton of Valais, at about 1,171 meters. The panorama looks down from the forested slopes into the Rhône valley at its great bend, with the town of Martigny spread across the valley floor, the river and highway, and high mountains on every side, including the valleys that lead south toward the Great St Bernard and Chamonix.

Valais is one of the driest regions of Switzerland, sheltered by the mountains, and this view shows how weather moves through the valleys. You may see clouds lying along the mountainsides, rain or snow on the peaks, and long sunny days with sharp views. In winter, cold air and fog can fill the valley floor while the slopes above stay sunny. The Martigny area is also known for strong valley winds. MeteoSwiss uses this camera to watch weather along flight routes through the Rhône valley and the western Alps.

The camera saves a new panoramic still image every ten minutes, and at twilight it uses an infrared filter for black-and-white pictures. A practical tip: the time stamp is in UTC, one or two hours behind Swiss time.
