What you are looking at

This camera stands at Jigokunuma, a steaming hot-spring pond on the southwest foot of Odake, the highest peak of the Hakkoda mountains in Aomori. It sits beside the road near Sukayu Onsen, about two and a half kilometers from the summit, at almost nine hundred meters, close to one of the most active spots in the range.

Hakkoda is a large group of volcanoes in two clusters, north and south. Fumaroles dot the slopes between Sukayu and Jigokunuma, and JMA notes that the three most recent eruptions of the northern group, steam explosions between the 13th and 17th centuries, happened at Jigokunuma itself. Volcanic gas is a real hazard here: it has caused deaths in hollows on the mountain, so posted warnings matter. In winter the area is known for heavy snow and rime-covered trees, while summer and autumn bring hikers and hot-spring visitors.

JMA runs a Volcanic Alert Level for Hakkodasan, a five-step scale that starts with Level 1, a reminder that the volcano is active, and climbs to evacuation at Level 5. Check JMA's current level before heading out.
