What you are looking at
This JMA camera watches Iwakisan, the lone, symmetrical cone known as Tsugaru Fuji, from Hyakuzawa on its southeast slope above Hirosaki in Aomori Prefecture. Hyakuzawa is home to the Iwakiyama Shrine and a hot spring area, and from a few kilometers out the camera frames the steep upper mountain rising over the forest and orchards of the Tsugaru plain.
Iwakisan is the highest mountain in Aomori. Its summit is a pair of lava domes that filled an older, broken crater, and a horseshoe-shaped scar on the northeast side marks a great collapse in the distant past. Eruptions in historical times were steam-driven, and JMA notes that the mountain is prone to mudflows. Snow lingers late into spring, autumn turns the slopes red and gold, and the peak often wears a cap of cloud.
JMA publishes a Volcanic Alert Level for Iwakisan on a scale of 1 to 5, with higher numbers moving from crater-area restrictions to evacuation of nearby areas. The current level, not a single picture, is the right guide, so please check JMA's latest announcement.
