What you are looking at
This IVE camera is high on Iliamna Volcano itself, at about 1,210 m (3,980 feet), roughly 4 km (3 miles) east-southeast of the summit. It looks west-northwest at the upper mountain: rocky ridges and ice fields, with the summit area rising beyond, and often a steam plume from the fumaroles high on the volcano. Snow and rock in the foreground show how close the camera is.
Iliamna has no confirmed historical eruptions, but it has persistent fumaroles near the summit and is known for very large avalanches of ice and rock that sweep down its flanks. Bouts of seismic unrest, most recently in 2011 and 2012, were linked to magma moving deep below. The Alaska Volcano Observatory Iliamna page lists the current alert level.
The picture on this page is a still frame, renewed about every ten minutes. Clear, cold mornings often show the steam plume best, while clouds can wrap the upper mountain by midday. Snow covers the foreground for most of the year. Tip: steam from the fumaroles is normal at Iliamna, so a white plume here is usually not a sign of eruption; check AVO for any change.
