What you are looking at
Perched just north of the central crater of Mihara-yama, the volcano at the heart of Izu-Oshima, this JMA camera looks across the summit area at close range. The island lies in the Pacific south of Tokyo Bay, and the camera stands at nearly seven hundred meters on the rim area, where a broad desert of black lava and cinders surrounds the deep central pit.
Izu-Oshima is one of Japan's most active volcanoes. In November 1986 lava fountains rose from the summit and a fissure opened toward the town of Motomachi, and all of the island's residents were evacuated by boat for about a month. The last eruption came in 1990. Today a walking trail leads across the lava fields to a viewpoint over the crater, and on clear days Mount Fuji can sometimes be seen from the island. Fog and strong winds are common at this height.
JMA keeps Izu-Oshima on its five-level Volcanic Alert Level, where higher steps restrict the crater area, then the island's mountain, then call for evacuation. Visitors should check JMA's current level before hiking to the crater.
