What you are looking at
The Izu-Tobu volcanoes are not one mountain but a field of dozens of small volcanoes spread across the eastern Izu Peninsula and the sea floor offshore. This JMA camera stands at Ohara in Ito, a low coastal spot about forty meters above sea level, where it has been in place since 1990. Rather than one summit, it keeps watch over a landscape whose vents are scattered across land and sea.
The field is famous for swarms of small earthquakes beneath the sea off Ito. In 1989 one such episode ended with a small submarine eruption just offshore, at Teishi Knoll, the first eruption in the field in recorded history. On land, the best-known member is Omuroyama, a grassy cinder cone south of the city. Most days the scene is calm, and changes in the picture come mostly from weather, light and season, from spring haze to clear winter air.
JMA rates the Izu-Tobu volcanoes on its five-step Volcanic Alert Level and also publishes information on earthquake swarms that may precede activity. For the present status, check JMA's current alert level rather than the image.
