What you are looking at

Set in Miyagino, a hot-spring village inside the Hakone caldera, this JMA camera looks west toward Owakudani and the central cone of Kamiyama, around three kilometers away. It sits about five hundred meters above sea level, so the view climbs from the forested valley floor to the steaming slopes where Hakone's fumaroles are most active.

Hakoneyama is a large caldera volcano with lava domes in its middle, and Owakudani, the "great boiling valley," is its best-known sight, with sulfur vents, steam and the famous black eggs cooked in hot springs. In 2015 a small steam eruption occurred at Owakudani, and the area was closed to visitors for a time; restrictions near the vents have been adjusted since as activity changed. Clouds often roll over the caldera rim, and on clear winter days steam plumes show up best.

JMA rates Hakoneyama on its five-level Volcanic Alert Level, where Level 2 keeps people away from the vent area and Level 3 closes more of the mountain. Before visiting Owakudani or riding the ropeway, check JMA's current level.
