What you are looking at
This JMA camera watches Mount Fuji from Hagiwara in Gotemba, about nineteen kilometers east-southeast of the summit. From here the volcano fills the frame with its broad eastern and southeastern slopes, including the flank where the Hoei crater, the scar of Fuji's most recent eruption, opens below the peak.
That eruption began in December 1707 and spread ash as far as Edo, today's Tokyo. Fuji has been quiet since, but it remains an active volcano under round-the-clock watch. The view changes a great deal through the year: the summit is snow-capped from autumn into early summer, clear winter mornings often give the sharpest outline, and summer brings haze and cloud that can hide the mountain for days. The climbing season on the Gotemba trail opens only in summer.
JMA rates Fuji on its five-level Volcanic Alert Level. At Level 1 the volcano is considered active but not erupting; higher levels restrict the crater area or the mountain, and the top levels call on nearby residents to prepare or evacuate. Please check JMA's current alert level for the latest.
