What you are looking at
This JMA camera takes the long view of Midagahara, the volcano also known as Tateyama volcano, from Ashikura, a village in Tateyama town in the valley far below. It sits under four hundred meters above sea level, nearly twenty kilometers west of the active area, so expect a distant, wide view up toward the high plateau and the Tateyama range, often softened by haze or cloud.
Midagahara is a broad plateau built from old volcanic flows, crossed by the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. JMA notes that magma eruptions ended tens of thousands of years ago, but steam explosions have since blasted many craters on the plateau's eastern part, and Jigokudani, the "hell valley" near Murodo, still has vigorous fumaroles. Volcanic gas there has led to trail closures in recent years. In spring the route opens between towering snow walls; autumn brings brilliant color to the slopes.
Midagahara has a Volcanic Alert Level on JMA's five-step scale, under criteria in use since 2019. Levels run from 1, an active volcano, to 5, evacuation. Check JMA's current level and local closures before you travel.
