What you are looking at
From Norikura Kogen, the highland resort on the Nagano side, this JMA camera looks west-southwest toward Norikuradake, about six and a half kilometers away. Standing almost fifteen hundred meters up, it frames the long, gentle eastern slopes rising to Kengamine, the summit of this three-thousand-meter volcano on the border of Nagano and Gifu.
Norikuradake is a chain of volcanic bodies running roughly north to south, with crater lakes and ponds scattered around its top. JMA notes that there are no fumaroles at the summit and that, by the geological record, eruptions over the last ten thousand years came every several hundred years, with the latest about five hundred years ago. A high road brings buses to Tatamidaira in summer, making this one of the easiest three-thousand-meter peaks in Japan to reach. In winter the mountain is buried in snow, and spring skiers climb its upper bowls.
JMA rates Norikuradake on its Volcanic Alert Level, a scale from 1 to 5 that moves from a reminder of an active volcano to evacuation. For the current situation, check JMA's latest level.
