What you are looking at

Nakanoshima is one of the Tokara Islands, a remote chain between Yakushima and Amami in Kagoshima Prefecture, and this JMA camera watches its volcano, Otake, from Yoriki, a low spot near the coast about three kilometers south of the summit. From here the view runs up the island's green slopes to the peak, the highest point in the Tokara chain.

The island is made of two joined volcanoes, but JMA notes that all eruptions in recorded history came from Otake, the northwestern one. Fumaroles steam inside the summit crater and on the southeast flank. JMA put this camera into service in March 2026, together with one on the summit, adding a closer daily watch on a volcano that had little camera coverage before. The island is reached by a ferry from Kagoshima, and typhoons can cut it off in late summer and autumn.

Unlike many Japanese volcanoes, Nakanoshima has no Volcanic Alert Level; JMA instead issues eruption forecasts and warnings, currently reminding people that it is an active volcano and that gas may collect in low ground near the vents. Check JMA's current information for the latest.
