What you are looking at
The California Academy of Sciences streams this camera from its Philippine Coral Reef exhibit in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The Academy calls it one of the deepest displays of live coral in the world. It recreates the coral reefs and mangroves of the Philippines, a global biodiversity hotspot where the Academy's own scientists do research.
The camera shows a crowded reef: schools of colorful reef fish, anthias and tangs, rays and reef sharks moving over living corals. The Academy holds daily dive programs at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Pacific time, when divers feed the animals and answer visitors' questions from inside the tank, so you may see and hear a diver among the fish. At other times the reef is busy but calm, and the fish follow their own routines.
The stream plays as live video on YouTube day and night. The Academy notes that a dark screen usually means it is nighttime in San Francisco, when the exhibit lights are low. A practical tip: watch during California daylight hours for the brightest colors, and catch a scheduled dive for the most action.
